What is a catastrophic injury and why is a lawyer a necessity in these cases?

In many personal injury cases, the physical harm that a person experiences can be corrected in a fairly short period of time and without significant medical attention. A catastrophic personal injury claim, however, is one that involves a person whose injuries will affect her for a long period of time, and perhaps for the rest of her life. These injuries can include brain damage, spinal cord damage, and severe burns.
Catastrophic personal injury cases should always be handled with the assistance of an experienced personal injury attorney. It is best to find one who is familiar with the type of injury that the victim has suffered. It has been found that in such cases victims are commonly undercompensated despite the fact that their lives are usually altered and they require extensive medical treatment. This is especially egregrious when the affected life is that of a child.
Regardless of whether the victim wishes to settle the case in or out of court, legal representation is needed to assess and argue for damages that are sufficient to cover all of the categories of expenses, including pain and suffering, long term care, and loss of the previous quality of life. It is very unlikely that a victim can expect a fair settlement if she is not represented by an excellent attorney. This can result in a person having to bear an unnecessary financial burden in addition to her injuries.
